NEW DELHI: In a groundbreaking move aimed at revolutionizing Indias logistics landscape, the Essar group venture GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd has announced a substantial equity investment of $275 million. This infusion of capital is set to expedite the decarbonization of heavy trucking in India, a sector notorious for its high carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. Among the investors, notable entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath has contributed $20 million, underscoring the significance of this initiative in transforming Indias transport infrastructure.

GreenLine Mobility Solutions is Indias only operator of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and electric-powered heavy commercial trucks. The companys mission is ambitious yet crucial, targeting a reduction of carbon emissions from the transportation sector, which currently accounts for nearly 15% of the nations total carbon output. With this new funding, GreenLine plans to deploy over 10,000 LNG and electric vehicles (EVs), alongside the creation of a comprehensive network consisting of 100 LNG refueling stations, EV charging stations, and battery swapping facilities across the country.

This extensive initiative is projected to significantly mitigate environmental impact, with an aim to decrease annual carbon emissions by 1 million tonnes. By offering logistics services at a cost that is on par with traditional diesel trucks, GreenLine ensures that its customers can participate in this green shift without incurring additional expenses.

India's road logistics sector is marked by over 4 million trucks currently in operation, making it one of the most carbon-intensive industries in the nation. As the Indian government sets ambitious targets to lower greenhouse gas emissions, GreenLine is strategically positioning itself to lead the transition of the heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) fleet from diesel to LNG and electric alternatives. The companys LNG-powered trucks promise to reduce carbon dioxide (CO) emissions by up to 30%, making them an appealing choice for corporations focused on achieving sustainability objectives.

The existing fleet of GreenLine includes more than 650 LNG trucks, which have successfully serviced prominent clients across various sectors, including fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), e-commerce, metals, mining, cement, oil, gas, and chemicals. To date, these trucks have collectively traversed an impressive distance of over 38 million kilometers, contributing to a reduction of CO emissions by 10,000 tonnes.

Anshuman Ruia, a director at GreenLine, expressed enthusiasm about this pivotal shift in Indias heavy trucking sector. He stated, We are really excited about this game-changing shift in Indias heavy trucking industry. We see this as an opportunity to not only build the green mobility ecosystem but also, in the future, invest in clean energy sources to power our electric trucks. This integrated approach will significantly reduce emissions, cut down on energy imports, and help drive India towards achieving a more sustainable, energy-secure future.

Echoing similar sentiments, GreenLines CEO Anand Mimani remarked that this investment aligns closely with the company's vision of pioneering transformation in Indias road logistics sector. Investor Nikhil Kamath emphasized the critical nature of this transition, stating, Green mobility isnt just a trend; its the inevitable future. Backing GreenLine is a bet on that future, where sustainability and efficiency go hand in hand.
