MOSCOW: In a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday, May 11, his proposal to engage in direct talks with Ukraine. He suggested that these discussions take place in Istanbul on May 15, aiming to pave the way for a lasting peace and address the fundamental issues that have fueled the war.

This announcement came shortly after the Ukrainian government, alongside several European leaders, called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire set to commence on Monday. The appeal for a ceasefire reflects growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict, which has led to significant loss of life and displacement of civilians.

During a late-night press briefing at the Kremlin, Putin emphasized the importance of serious negotiations, stating, “We are determined to have serious negotiations ... to eliminate the root causes of the conflict.” He expressed hope that these discussions could lead to a new ceasefire agreement, although he refrained from directly acknowledging the Ukrainian-led call for a ceasefire starting the following day.

In his remarks, Putin asserted, “It was not Russia that broke off negotiations in 2022. It was Kyiv.” He emphasized that Russia is ready to resume direct negotiations without any preconditions. “Our proposal, as they say, is on the table,” he stated, suggesting that the ball is now in the court of the Ukrainian authorities and their international supporters. He criticized the leadership in Kyiv, implying that their decisions are influenced more by personal political ambitions than by the well-being of their citizens.

Furthermore, Putin reiterated his invitation for negotiations to begin on Thursday, May 15, in Istanbul, indicating that he would reach out to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan soon to seek his assistance in facilitating these talks. Turkey has historically played a mediating role in conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine, owing to its strategic geopolitical position and relationships with both nations.

As the situation continues to evolve, the world watches closely to see if these proposed discussions will materialize and whether they will lead to a de-escalation of the conflict and a restoration of peace in the region.
