NEED TO KNOW: Authorities have officially disclosed the cause of death for Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins, who tragically lost her life while hiking Mount Rinjani in Indonesia.
On June 21, Marins was traversing the challenging terrain of the 12,224-foot tall volcano alongside five friends when she fell from a cliff adjacent to the crater. It was reported that the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. local time. After an extensive search lasting several days, her lifeless body was finally located on June 24.
Following the recovery, an autopsy revealed that Marins suffered "internal bleeding caused by damage to organs and bone fractures." This harrowing conclusion was presented during a press conference held by a local coroner at the Bali Mandara Hospital in Denpasar, as reported by Brazilian news outlet O Globo.
The autopsy results indicated that the injuries sustained by Marins were likely the result of blunt force trauma, which was believed to have occurred shortly before her body was discovered. Authorities noted that it is estimated she died within 20 minutes after the onset of internal bleeding. Dr. Ida Bagus Putu Alit, the coroner, reported there were no indications of hypothermia or prolonged suffering, suggesting the severity of her injuries led to a swift demise.
The family of Marins confirmed her death in a heartfelt statement released on the same day that her body was found, expressing their profound sorrow. “Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was. With immense sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers and support we have received,” they stated.
In the wake of this tragedy, Marins' family took to social media to advocate for justice, claiming that the rescue team had been negligent in their efforts. They indicated that if the rescue team had acted more promptly—ideally within a 7-hour timeframe—Marins might still be alive. “Juliana suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,” they wrote in a translated statement.
During the descent towards the peak, Muhammad Hariyadi, the head of local rescuers, confirmed that Marins did not fall into the crater, but rather onto a sandy surface that complicated the retrieval efforts. The rescue operation, which involved around 50 personnel, faced significant challenges due to the terrain.
Drone footage released by Brazilian outlet TV Brasil EBC seemed to show Marins conscious and fidgeting in the grey sand shortly after her fall, raising hopes for a timely rescue. However, the following day, she was not seen in the footage, and it was not until June 23 that her location was confirmed again by rescue teams.
Prior to the discovery of her body, Marins’ family made urgent appeals on social media, expressing their concerns about the slow progress of the rescue efforts. They revealed that after an entire day, the team had only managed to advance a mere 250 meters towards Juliana, who they reported was only 350 meters away, pleading, “WE NEED HELP, WE NEED THE RESCUE TO REACH JULIANA URGENTLY!”
Mount Rinjani, known as Indonesia’s second-highest volcano and a popular hiking destination, has attracted numerous adventurers, but it also poses significant risks due to its challenging terrain.
