In a heartbreaking incident on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, around 7:45 a.m., a school van carrying four students was tragically struck by a passenger train at a manned level crossing in Semmankuppam, located in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. The collision resulted in the deaths of at least three school children and left two others, including the driver of the van, with serious injuries. This devastating event has shocked the local community and raised concerns regarding railway safety protocols.

The ill-fated van belonged to Krishnaswamy Vidyanikethan, a private school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It was attempting to cross railway gate number 170, a non-interlocked manned gate that serves as a crucial point between Cuddalore and Alappakkam, when it was struck by train number 56813, which was en route from Villupuram to Mayiladuthurai. One additional student suffered injuries and has since been admitted to the Government Hospital in Cuddalore for medical attention.

Eyewitness accounts have revealed alarming details surrounding the incident. Onlookers reported that the railway gatekeeper, identified as Pankaj Sharma, had allegedly dozed off at the critical moment, failing to close the gate in time to prevent the van from crossing the tracks. In the aftermath of the tragic collision, enraged bystanders reportedly attacked the gatekeeper, holding him accountable for the horrific accident. However, preliminary investigations by authorities indicated a complex situation; while Mr. Sharma was attempting to close the gate, the van driver was insistent that he be allowed to cross, against safety regulations.

The local government and railway officials have begun an inquiry into the circumstances leading up to this calamity, aiming to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies. This incident has ignited a conversation about railway safety measures, particularly regarding the management of level crossings and the importance of alertness among railway personnel. Community leaders are now calling for stricter enforcement of safety protocols at manned railway crossings to protect children and other vulnerable road users.

As the community mourns the loss of young lives, parents and guardians are left grappling with the devastating impact of this incident. The school has expressed its profound sorrow and is providing support to the affected families as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.
