What if I told you that something from outer space rattled homes and sparked panic across Victoria? Just imagine a bright flash shooting across the night sky, followed by a thunderous boom that left residents wondering if their houses had exploded!

On Sunday night, a meteor made its grand entrance over Victoria, creating what many described as a sonic boom that reverberated through Melbourne, Ballarat, and Bendigo around 7:30 PM. Social media lit up with posts from stunned residents who were buzzing with excitement and confusion, sharing their tales of the celestial spectacle. Some even reported feeling what seemed like an earthquake, while others mistook the explosive sound for nearby blasts.

One observer from Strathfieldsaye, a suburb of Bendigo, called her neighbor in a panic, convinced that something had blown up nearby. The confusion didn't stop there, as other locals echoed her sentiments, saying it sounded like a scene out of a disaster movie. Experts quickly stepped in to clarify that this fireball was indeed a meteor, not space junk, and hinted that fragments might have made their home on Earth between Bendigo and Ballarat.

Andrew, a listener to ABC Radio Melbourne, recounted the moment with his colleagues at Port Melbourne. They were enjoying their dinner break when they witnessed the meteor blaze across the sky above the West Gate Bridge. In his words, “It was huge and very bright. We actually thought someone was playing a prank by setting fire to something and throwing it over our heads!”

Another eyewitness, Justin from Ballarat, shared his astonishment, stating, “It was just so bright. I could see it slowly moving across and then it just went straight, fast down to wherever it was going.” Such sightings remind us of the wonders—and sometimes the chaos—that can come from our universe, captivating our imaginations and reminding us of the unknown that lies just beyond our skies.
