What if I told you that the very vibrations from your voice could be picked up by radar and deciphered into conversations? Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it? But researchers have taken a giant leap towards this reality, and it’s raising significant privacy concerns that we cannot ignore.

This groundbreaking research, which builds on a fascinating 2022 project, has seen a team of scientists achieve an impressive 83% accuracy in recognizing ten specific words using a similar technology. First author Suryoday Basak, a dedicated doctoral candidate in computer science, explains the mechanics behind this astonishing feat. He points out that when we talk on our cellphones, we often overlook the vibrations that travel through the earpiece, causing our phones to shake. What if these vibrations could be captured remotely using radar technology? By combining this data with machine learning, researchers can cleverly piece together what’s being said, using contextual clues to reconstruct entire conversations.
