Imagine a world where artificial intelligence could actually work for the betterment of humanity rather than just being a playground for tech giants. This isn't just a pipe dream; it's the vision that YouTube sensation Markiplier, known for his relatable gaming content, is pursuing. It all began when he stumbled upon the bizarre world of generative AI, starting with OpenAI’s DALL-E.

For many people, the spark of curiosity about AI ignited with tools like DALL-E, which merged text with images in a way that was both captivating and downright surreal. Ironically, Mark Fischbach, better known as Markiplier, first encountered this trend with a mix of humor and fright. In a video he posted shortly after DALL-E's release in 2022, he hilariously critiqued the tool’s output, which often resembled a fever dream—think creatures with 15 fingers and backgrounds that looked like they were painted by a three-year-old. Markiplier's comedic take was entertaining, yet beneath the laughter was a growing sense of dread.

He wasn’t just making fun of the overly awkward AI-generated art; what truly unsettled him was the realization that this was only the beginning. ā€œI grew up around computers. From the age of five, I was around computers with my dad,ā€ Markiplier reflects. ā€œI knew the pace would increase.ā€ He had a point. As technology evolves, so do the stakes, and soon, generative AI moved beyond distorted images into realms that made reality seem less distinguishable.

Fast forward to today, and the landscape has changed dramatically. Companies now obsessively chase the next big technological breakthrough, pouring billions into generative AI development. It’s no longer just a novelty but a pervasive force reshaping entire industries. With tools emerging that can assist YouTubers with content ideas, writers with chapters, and entrepreneurs with startup concepts, the mantra is clear: think less, produce more. But at what cost?

Markiplier hasn’t been a passive observer in this whirlwind; he has actively sought to understand how generative technology is being harnessed. During his internship at Corridor Digital, a production and VFX studio, and with the guidance of Dr. Amanda Muyskens, a data scientist with a wealth of experience, he delved deeper into the intricacies of AI. His conclusions were anything but comforting.

He argues that the tools everyone is clamoring for aren’t truly ā€œintelligent.ā€ They’re large language models that can mimic human conversation but lack genuine thought or understanding. In a world where tech companies like Google and Meta leverage all available content—often without proper credit—Mark expresses concern about the legal murkiness surrounding AI. ā€œIt can’t be a secret that Google, owner of YouTube, used all YouTube videos,ā€ he asserts, highlighting a critical issue: the rapid advancement of AI is outpacing the laws meant to govern it.

Frustrated by the potential of AI being misused, he joined forces with Dr. Muyskens and her husband Bob to establish Real Good AI, a nonprofit dedicated to exploring how generative technology can positively impact society. Their mission is clear: to ethically pursue applications of AI that prioritize human welfare. ā€œWe’re focused on trying to ethically pursue ways to improve and develop new methods to make these tools work for humanity,ā€ Bob declares.

Some of Real Good AI’s initial projects are nothing short of groundbreaking. They aim to use data analysis to help nonprofits optimize their operations, understand the effects of public policy on homelessness, and even identify when language models are providing inaccurate information. The ambition is high, but the challenges are monumental. As Bob points out, ā€œSetting up a charity is a very difficult thing.ā€ While the team works diligently to carve out their niche, they face fierce competition from tech giants with deep pockets.

Despite the uphill battle, the support for Real Good AI is growing, especially following a recent controversy. After Markiplier discussed using ChatGPT during a podcast episode, he faced backlash for supposedly endorsing generative AI. But instead of shying away, he seized the moment, using the uproar to shine a light on his nonprofit and encourage donations. ā€œWhat was good about people raising a stink is that it gave me an opportunity to talk about [Real Good AI],ā€ he explained, and indeed, the response has been overwhelming.

As the demand for ethical AI research continues to rise, Markiplier and his team remain steadfast in their mission to create a better future through responsible innovation. The fight for good practices in science and technology may be challenging, but their hope is unwavering. ā€œWe’re just trying to keep that fire alive and be a beacon of good research,ā€ Bob adds.
