In a significant diplomatic effort, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, currently on a two-day official visit to Pakistan, emphasized the need for the ceasefire between Pakistan and India to be maintained and strengthened. This visit marks the first trip by a British Foreign Secretary to Pakistan since 2021, underscoring the importance of ongoing relations between the two nations, especially in light of recent tensions.
Lammy's visit comes in the aftermath of India's 'Operation Sindoor', which was launched in response to the harrowing Pahalgam terror attacks that tragically resulted in the loss of 26 lives. This military operation aimed at targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan, has added to the urgency of diplomatic dialogues to prevent further escalation of hostilities.
During his trip, Lammy engaged in significant discussions with key Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, focusing on regional security and the importance of a stable ceasefire. In a video shared on his X account, he stated, “My message has been clear with India, Pakistan, and international partners. The ceasefire must be sustained; further conflict is in nobody’s interest.” This statement reflects a broader call for peace and collaboration within the region.
In his remarks, Lammy expressed pride in the efforts made by the British Foreign Office to ensure the safety of British nationals in the area. He highlighted the importance of providing up-to-date, accurate information to protect their citizens amidst the complex security situation. “I am proud of the work that foreign office staff in both countries and back in the UK have done to ensure that British nationals in this part of the world have access to up-to-date, accurate advice and information to help keep them safe,” he added.
The visit follows what Lammy described as a “hugely welcome ceasefire” with India, recognizing the deep connections shared between the UK, Pakistan, and India. The UK has expressed its commitment to playing a constructive role in collaboration with both nations and other international partners to counter terrorism effectively and ensure that peace is not only established but also maintained in the long term.
Furthermore, shortly before his visit, Lammy addressed the House of Commons, reiterating the UK’s readiness to cooperate with both Pakistan and India to help solidify a lasting ceasefire. It is worth noting that the UK reportedly played a significant role in brokering the ceasefire agreement reached on May 10, which has since been viewed as a crucial step towards reducing tensions in the region.
The UK government has condemned the “horrendous” terrorist attack on April 22, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic engagement to promote stability in South Asia. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) officials indicated that Lammy’s visit was not only a show of support but also a strategic move to underscore the critical importance of ongoing stability in the region.
